Hello! I’m Kate Squires, and I write contemporary romance novels. Want to know a little bit more about me? Well, then keep reading!

Northeast Ohio, is where my life began and continues. I’m the only girl in my family of four older brothers, who lightheartedly tortured me as a child. My father was an avid reader, and was somehow able to watch TV, and read books simultaneously, without missing a beat. My mom loved to read as well, and was basically June Cleaver. Not that I am old enough to know who that is. 

I met my husband, though I was sure he wasn’t the one for me. Through his ability to make me laugh in any situation, I found that my original assumptions were incorrect, and we married three years later. His romantic side is often the inspiration for some of the parts in my books. Together with our four crazy children, we fight and make up, which incidentally, is how some of my best fight scenes are written!

Aside from writing, I’ve held other steady jobs. They range from Dog Groomer, to Home Health Aide, Housekeeper to Dance Teacher. I’ve also been a foster parent to countless children, and a host mom to several foreign exchange students. So, when do I find time to write? In between bringing home the bacon and frying it up in a pan, of course!

I’ve published a series of contemporary romance novels. That Kiss, and its sequel, That Promise, I Will Catch You, and Tracing Hearts. “Sarah?” She blinked at him. A small smile formed on her lips. She looked tired, but happy. Her eyes seemed to hold a secret. Like there was something she had just learned that made everything all right. Logan watched as the light in her blue eyes grew dim, but the smile remained. 

“Sarah.” Logan put his hands on either side of her face. His fingers speared through her hair. 

“Take care…of her, Logan. Don’t let him find her. He can’t find her.” She pulled in a shallow breath. “Always loved you. Was always yours,” she whispered to him. She smiled a bit more, and then that was it. Her eyes closed gently. Her chest slowly fell. The heart monitor flat lined. Logan stared, unwilling to believe his eyes. Unwilling to believe his ears. He could hear the baby was still crying as they checked her over. Her lungs sounded healthy. 

He listened as the other doctors worked between Sarah’s legs, one pushing on her stomach. Sarah’s limp body moved from the pressure of the doctor’s hand. And then reality came crashing in at the same time a wave of heat spread over his body like fire. Sarah’s chest didn’t move. He watched another beat, not believing what he was seeing. No. Logan roared. His face never left hers as he roared to the fates. His whole body shook with anger and disbelief as he bellowed his denial.

“Sarah! No! No! Help her!” he howled to the doctors. A middle-aged male nurse was suddenly next to him and tried to push Logan out of the way.

“No way. Promise you won’t rat me out to Dad.” I jumped in front of him and blocked my bedroom door, as if I could stop him. “He’ll be so ticked. Probably madder at you than me, and trust me, you don’t want to see him angry.”

Vladimir crossed his arms and studied my freaked out, arms-stretched-across-the-doorframe-stance. “You think I am afraid of your papa?”

“Of course not, but why do you want to provoke him? Everything’s fine. If he finds out, he’ll never let me see you again—please, I need you.”

Vladimir peeled my fingers off the doorframe, held my wrists, brought my arms down. He kissed my cheeks, but not in the usual way. His warm lips lingered on my skin while he massaged the nape of my neck. The closeness of our bodies and the heat emanating from his skin caused a groan to escape from my lips. Vladimir rubbed warm circles on my back and whispered Russian words in my ear to soothe me.

Prologue

We all have those moments that make us realize just how careless we’ve been. Those moments when we wish we could go back and change the way we acted, or the things we said. Reroute our path and make it better—better choices, better outcomes. 

If only we could take one small lie that escalated to heights beyond repair and be truthful. 

Lies—to some they were just words spoken, but to others, they were so much more. A turning point in a relationship or friendship that finalized its future. 

Some lies you just can’t come back from. The damage is too deep. 

The ones I told recently were destructive. They could have destroyed a good man had the right people found out. 

Even though I tried to fix it, tried to explain, it was hopeless. The damage was done and I found myself alone. 

Picking up the pieces of my own deceit and learning from those mistakes. 

One lie changed my life. It woke me to the reality that just a few words could forever change someone’s life. 

I spent my adolescent years believing I wasn’t enough. My parents were never supportive; on most days I felt as if they couldn’t wait until the day I moved out and moved on. I’d heard a few times how my father didn’t even want children, and that my mother had trapped him. 

He was a selfish man and in turn, my mother became selfish too. 

I’d have been better off if they’d given me up for adoption. I never understood why they didn’t. 

My father was heavy into gambling and my mother was oblivious, or she pretended to be. As long as she was able to have her weekly manicure and a bottle of vodka, she was set. Being drunk was her vice; she didn’t have to deal with reality if she was passed out. 

They were the ones who taught me one lie could get you out of almost anything, if you told it correctly. 

But they couldn’t have been more wrong.
