I took a few minutes to calm myself in the restroom before I stepped out and walked toward reception. As I rounded the corner and saw Valerie standing in front of my closed office door with her ear pressed against it, I became confused. “What are you doing?” I asked.

She let out a little squeal and turned to face me. With her hand pressed over her heart, she took in a deep breath. “Oh my God,” she whispered before taking in another breath. “He’s in there.” She pointed toward my office door.

“Who?” I asked, wrinkling my eyebrows at her in confusion. This was so unlike Valerie. She was always so calm and collected, but she was seriously rattled at the moment.

“Mr. Kovalsky,” she added in a whisper.

I rarely called him that since he insisted on R.J. But the fact he was waiting in my office first thing in the morning before I even arrived gave me that sick feeling of being followed all over again.

“Um, how long has he been here?”

“Seconds, literally. I just closed your door. He sort of gives me the creeps.” She shivered as she stepped away from my door.

“Yeah,” I said as I reached for the doorknob. “Me too,” I confessed as I turned it and entered.

“Good morning.” His deep, raspy tone did nothing for my nerves. “You look quite lovely this morning,” he added. I forced a smile as I rounded my desk and placed my briefcase on top of it.

I looked down at my clothing and hid my exasperation, or at least I hoped I did. “I’m sorry, R.J., but did we have an appointment this morning I’ve forgotten about?” I chose to dive right in. There was really no reason for small talk.

The guy was becoming more of an issue than a client. I had spent hours upon hours showing him every property I could find, yet he always acted as if it wasn’t quite what he was hoping for. I had a feeling he would never find the right place, which made me think there was more to this man than Margo had told me.

“Not at all,” he said as he lounged back in the chair on the other side of my desk and crossed his ankle over his left knee. He stared back at me with that look that made me want to run away. Valerie’s earlier comment came to mind. Mr. R.J. Kovalsky was definitely a very strange man.

“I was in the area,” he said, and I shifted my gaze back to his. “I was hoping maybe I could change your mind about dinner. Possibly convince you to give a man a shot.”

“A shot at what, exactly?” I knew I shouldn’t say anything, but I was honestly growing quite irritated with his advances. Especially after I had told him I wasn’t interested. I had a job to do, that was it. I wanted nothing from this man, and that commission check I was looking forward to cashing after selling him the biggest property I could find no longer meant as much.

“You are a very beautiful woman, Gabriella.” He smirked, and that nauseous feeling formed a lump at the base of my throat. “I just think you’re missing an opportunity at something that may possibly be great for the both of us.”

I stared back at him, trying to maintain my composure. I was pretty sure if I picked up my desk phone and heaved it at his head, I would be facing battery charges, but it sure sounded great. The idea of it bouncing off his arrogant ass only made me smile in amusement. But of course the dickhead took my smile for something it wasn’t.

“See, you like the idea of it too,” he added with a cocky grin.

“No, actually, I was enjoying the vision of you writhing in pain after my phone collided with your forehead.”

He tilted his head to the side, and the smile fell from his lips.

Oh fuck, I actually did say that out loud.

He stood from the chair, and his quick movements caught me off guard. I too stood up, pushing my own chair back in the process.

“Well, I never took you for the aggressive type, but a little pain keeps things interesting.” He ran his tongue over his bottom lip. “I’ll admit the idea of your cries do make my heart race a bit.”

Forget about my early state of nausea. It had now turned to bile that was rising in my throat. My entire chest burned from it. I suddenly felt trapped as my hands began to shake. I fisted them, trying to hide my obvious panic, but it was too late. His smile grew wider, like scaring me excited him.

Tremaine burst through the door, slamming it shut. He fused the knob and trapped the sound with the same spell. When he turned toward Robert, the rage on his face sent a thrill of fear down Robert’s spine.

“You happy with yourself?”

Robert stood, meeting his glare. “What on earth are you talking about?”

He growled. “You scared the fuck out of Liz by not coming home and sending that cowardly text. Why? Because you’re pissed about my past? I gave you those files thinking you could see the bigger fucking picture. Now you want to accuse me of what? Treason against the Council? Draecyn’s the bastard who sent me on the goddamned case to begin with.”

Robert drew in a slow breath, trying to gather his words. He’d never seen Tremaine this angry before. Generally, he was levelheaded through the worst of times.

“Nothing?” Tremaine spat. When Robert didn’t answer, he snarled, “Really think I could do all that?”

Robert stepped around the desk, anger flickering to life. “You tell me, Tremaine. What am I supposed to think? You handed me stacks of files without warning me what was in there. Of course, I’m going to question every single thing.”

Tremaine shook his head in slow motion, his brown eyes fading to gold, flashing with light. “You question what side I was on, then fucking question me like a man. Don’t hide away from Liz. You didn’t see the look on her face when she asked me if you got tired of her and wanted to give up.”

“I’ll never give up on her.” An array of emotions splintered through Robert as he took a step closer, narrowing his eyes. “Yes, I made one bad decision. I gave her what I thought she wanted nearly twenty-two years ago. Never again.”

“Then why didn’t you come home?” Tremaine demanded.

He growled in frustration. “I was so twisted up trying to make sense of everything I read and couldn’t come home to see you wrapped around her, which I knew you had to be.”

“Do you think I wanted to go so deep into HARP? Think I wanted to do all that shit? Tell me something, Robert, why do you think Draecyn sent me? No one else could get into HARP’s ranks. Draecyn knew I was the only one with any kind of chance of getting intel because he was the only one who knew who my real father was.”

Robert’s heart sank. And they were right back to what he had finally realized a second before Tremaine barged in. “Because you’re half druid?”

Tremaine’s hands trembled a moment before they fisted. He stepped closer until he was an inch from Robert’s face. “Exactly. I didn’t choose the assignment. It was chosen for me. And yeah, they expelled me… technically, but I kept Draecyn in the loop. Did you skip his files?”

“You could have warned me what was really in there.”

“So you could question if I was just saying that to keep you in our bed? No. Thank. You. I gave you every last shred of the files so you could see what happened and draw your own conclusions. Apparently, that was the wrong fucking move.”

Robert’s jaw clenched. “Last night, after reading the final files, my head was swimming with a million details I didn’t understand. This morning they clicked into place, forming the bigger picture. I needed time to process.”

“Next time, man up and call me. Tell me to fucking leave so you can go to Liz and not break her to pieces when she starts wondering if you really love her.”

“Of course, I love her. I’ve always loved her. I didn’t want to fight in front of her when I was so lost in the details I couldn’t see the truth. Now back off.”

Tremaine inched closer, his eyes lasered on Robert’s. “You want to lose Liz?”

Robert shook his head.

“Me? I’d understand that. Is it too much now? If so, it’s too damned late to get rid of me. I’ve always loved Liz, and I love you, but right now you disgust me. I’ve never done a damned thing to make you doubt me like this.”

Robert attempted to shove him away, but Tremaine didn’t move. Frustrated, he hissed, “Had you waited ten more minutes, I would have been past the doubt. I needed time, Trem.” He reached for his phone to call Liz.

Tremaine caught it and threw it across the room. “Fuck that. Stop and talk to me! Tell me what I have to do to convince you I’m not part of HARP?”

“I know you’re not. There’s still a million questions on the tip of my tongue, but I get it.”

“Promise you won’t do that to Liz again,” Tremaine insisted.

“I swear it, and I’m sorry.” He met Tremaine’s golden stare. “Do you hate me now?”

“You know better. I love you. You’re a piece of my soul. I can’t have you thinking I’m that scum.” He closed the distance, looking into Robert’s eyes with deep intensity.

Desire washed through Robert. He gripped the back of Tremaine’s neck and pulled him in for a bruising kiss. Then he hissed into Tremaine’s ear. “I love you too.”

“Prove it,” Tremaine growled, reaching behind Robert to shove everything off the desk. Files fell to the floor, books, journals, everything, even the phone.

Their mouths collided, tongue’s dueling, teeth gnashing. Robert stood, and Tremaine pushed his jacket off, then gripped Robert’s shirt, ripping it open. Buttons flew across the room.

Connor leaned against the window frame with his arms crossed as he watched the waves crashing against the rocks. In front of him, as wide as the horizon, was the ocean. With the clouds drifting in from the sea, the sky had turned grey and dark, and he knew there’d be even more rain coming later in the day.

He would’ve enjoyed the scene if it hadn’t reminded him of his changing life. He’d been back in Fermosa Bay for two days already, but the memories of the first seven years of his life he’d spent in this small Australian coastal town were tucked away in the back of his mind. Seemingly inaccessible. Nowadays, his life was in London and had been for the last twenty-three years. He took a couple of deep breaths as he looked towards the harbour in the distance, and the small town in the alcove with the hilly forest in the background where he’d spend the first seven years of his life. It was truly one very picturesque little place.

A noise from the other end of the house hauled him back from his thoughts, and he stepped away from the window. Over the last few weeks, since he’d decided to accept Jack’s invitation to Australia, he’d had visions of what he’d find here. His mother hadn’t told him much about the time she’d lived here, except about Jack owning a pub. Connor had been furious for her lack of memory, but in the end admitted to himself it’d probably not been a time she’d like to remember.

So he was surprised to find out that Jack lived in this massive house just outside Fermosa Bay, on the top of the cliffs, with a view over the ocean. The house had five rooms and a small study at the back. The lounge room, with a high pitched ceiling, had wood fire heating and a big window front. Connor had loved the house the instant he’d stepped into it.

When he entered the hall, he saw his father and said, “Good morning, Jack.”

The old man sighed sadly. “You still can’t bring it over your heart to call me Dad?”

Connor’s gaze wandered from his father to all the many framed photos along the wall. Jack was in many of the photos, but most them had people in them he didn’t know, except the biggest one, which showed Connor as a child in Jack’s arms. A wave of sadness shook him. No, it wasn’t in him to call him Dad. Or to even think of him as his dad.

After a moment’s silence, he turned to his father and shook his head. “Sorry.”

Jack coughed, and Connor quickly rushed to his side, holding him upright.

“Another bad day?” Connor asked.

“Son, there will be no more good days. One day is like the other, until it will be the last.”

The words struck Connor deep enough to feel some emotions for his father. He knew time was running out, but hearing it made it sound final.

“There’s a front coming, but I think you’d be able to sit outside for a little while. At least until the nurse comes.”

Jack simply nodded.

Connor helped his father out onto the deck where the old man sat down on his swing seat.

“Thanks, Son.”

Without a reply, Connor stepped away and watched the sea again.

“I couldn’t keep you away from the water when you were a child,” Jack said.

“What do you mean?” Connor asked.

Jack didn’t answer, so he turned around to look at his father. The old man stared into the distance, a withdrawn expression on his face.

“You were constantly in the water. Whatever opportunity you had, you grabbed your little board and spent most of the day there.”

“So what happened?”

His father shrugged. “You left with your mother.”

Sitting down on the chair next to Jack, Connor let out a long breath. “Something must’ve happened. I never go near water, let alone go in it.”

Still gazing into the distance, Jack said, “I still have the blue board. Ethan’s little son sometimes uses it nowadays.”

Not sure where the conversation was heading, Connor just went along. “Who’s Ethan?” he asked.

The reaction from his father wasn’t what he expected. With his shoulders sagged, Jack closed his eyes. He looked so old and frail. From what Connor saw in all the photos around the house, cancer had taken a lot of life out of his father, leaving behind a haggard body with no energy left. Initially, he’d been taken aback by their similarities in looks, with their dark brown eyes and dark blond hair, including the stubborn curl above the ears, but after all, Jack was his father.

“Ethan was your best friend when you lived here.”

Pain shot through Connor as he was again confronted with a piece of information about his past that he knew nothing about. What had happened all those years ago, that his memory blocked these recollections of his childhood?

“How is your mother?” Jack asked suddenly.

Was it a sign of his illness that the old man wasn’t able to hold on to one topic anymore, or was he out to annoy Connor?

“She’s doing well.”

“Married?”

“Yes.”

Jack nodded. “She was beautiful when she lived here. So beautiful.”

Leaning forward to rest his arms on his knees, Connor asked, “Why did you ask her to leave?”

Finally, their eyes locked, and his father’s confusion took Connor aback.

“Son, what are you talking about?”

What reviewers are saying about ECHOES OF THE PAST:

I received this book as an ARC - and absolutely loved it!!!!
It is sweet and gentle yet filled with very strong emotions book, which will make you ponder upon the fate and decisions of the characters long after you finish reading :)

It will appeal not only to the true romance-loving readers, but also to those who, like me, reach for that genre occasionally, when in need of a read that would touch their hearts :D And this is it!!!
I honestly do not remember last time I've read something so gentle, so dear - yet tugging on all the inner feelings strings with quite a strength!

For Emily, who lived her whole life in the sleepy Fermosa Bay Australia she always knew that Connor was the one. At seven years old, the whole town had them married off living a quiet happy life. But when an innocent accident happens, Connor’s mother takes the opportunity to whisk her son away to a life that offers more.

Growing up in London in the shadow of his step father, Connor becomes a successful and sought after lawyer with the world at his feet. When his biological father tracks him down, a father he has no memory of and asks him to return home to Australia, Connor can’t say no. Especially to his dying father.

This is a beautiful tale of rediscovering what you already had and what really matters. Reconnecting with old friends and old loves opens Connor’s heart to a world he never anticipated. Iris had me in tears with this sweet story of coming home. Congratulations. A must read for anyone with a romantic heart!
