EXCERPT REVEAL: Rules of Friendship by C.A. Harms

RULES OF FRIENDSHIP by C.A. Harms releases August 6th!

PRE-ORDER AVAILABLE NOW! Amazon US | Amazon UNIVERSAL

As a guy, the number one rule to being best friends with a girl should be simple…

Never, and I do mean never, fall in love with her.
Oh and you should never fantasize about her either.

Believe me, that situation can get messy really fast and leave you with nothing but one hell of an awkward mess on your hands—literally.

Reese and I have been through everything together; our bond is deep. But I am going down fast, and I fear there is no way to stop it. I spend most of my time hiding my body’s reaction to her because like I said: just friends.

But things are changing. We are changing.

I no longer see her as just Reese, my best friend. When I look at her now, I see a gorgeous woman that takes my breath away. I see my future. But what if she doesn’t see me the same way?

I can’t risk losing her…

The fear of screwing everything up is excruciating. So that’s why I have chosen to stick to the rules. The Rules of Friendship that is.

She was off limits. Plain and simple.

But then in she walks wearing her tiny shorts and those tight tops. Come on, a guy can only have so much restraint before he caves…

EXCERPT REVEAL
It is time for me to stop moping, time to stop avoiding Reese. The girl is too much a part of my life, and even I have felt her absence over the last week or so. I can’t avoid her. How is avoiding her even possible when everything in my life revolves around her in some way? It has for as long as I can remember. She has been there in everything I do. Every choice I ever make, I subconsciously think of what Reese would say.

I guess I never realized it before . . . until now.

This attraction I have for her feels crippling at times, and I was stupid enough to think that if I remained distant, it would just go away. The only thing it manages to do is make me want her more. Make me crave her touch, desire the feel of her body pressed to mine. The fear I felt long ago has diminished and is now replaced with a need to know. To know if what I am feeling is something she’s feeling too.

Even as I sit at a high-top table surrounded by her friends and mine, she is all I can see. Her laughter rings out above all. Her smile is like a beacon of light I can’t ignore. I have never before been so aware of another’s person movements. So conscious of each shift. Each look. Each breath. It is almost like a switch has been flipped and the years of feeling nothing more than friendship no longer exist. It makes me wonder if the attraction has always been there, buried underneath the surface, hiding under the comfortable state we’ve lived in for so long.

“You gonna watch her all night ?” Kevin nudges my elbow with his own. “Or you planning to do something about the shit you feel finally?”

I look away from Reese who stands a few feet away laughing with Heather and another girl they invited along.

“I don’t know what you—”

“Bullshit,” he interrupts, tipping his beer back and finishing the last of its contents. “I see it. I’ve seen it, and you can keep pretending it isn't there, but let me assure you it’s written all over your face. Every time she walks into a room, it’s almost like you know without even looking. You gravitate to her, and I know you both think that it’s because you’ve known one another for so long, but I don’t buy that shit one bit. You feel something, and she feels something, so I’m just wondering when the two of you are gonna face it.”

EXCERPT REVEAL
She moved her hand from my shoulder and slid it down my chest. I thought she was going to push me back. I slid my hand down her back wanting to pull her closer, but I resisted knowing I’d probably already pushed her to her limit.

I could kiss your sweet mouth all night, and I would love every second.

She drew back, her hand still on my chest. Alexandra looked up at me and I could see a mixture of emotion in her eyes. “What is it?”

“So many people come and go. I can’t just—”

“If this thing between us turns to something more, you won’t be able to get rid of me,” I said realizing as the words came spilling out of my mouth that they were much more forthcoming than I’d intended them to be.

I was afraid for a moment that I’d probably just scared her away. Instead, she grabbed the front of my shirt and pulled me close. “Then I guess the only thing to do is give this a real shot,” she said as my arms wrapped around her.

Alexandra’s lean arms crossed at the back of my neck as she pulled me in closer. The soft curve of her breasts pushed against my chest making my body ache to feel her against my skin in a way that I couldn’t ever remember feeling before.

Everywhere her body touched mine came alive.

My tongue delved into her open mouth. I let out a groan as I tasted her deeply, gathering her even closer to me. She couldn’t possibly know how much she was undoing me with her kiss.

She drew on my tongue with her mouth in a sweet suction that made my already hard shaft throb with need.

MEET THE AUTHOR:
I was born in the southern United States in 1975. My family moved around so often that Anywhere, USA became home; as long as it was below the Mason Dixon line. I started college at Northwestern State University of Louisiana, but after three semesters decided I lacked the desire to follow the daily routine and strict schedule required to be a successful college student. I was a wild card...an ADHD poster child.

One day I realized that my life had been scattered, and in that moment I could suddenly, and clearly see the results of a life that held no sense of direction. It was my life, and a life that embarrassed me because of my lack of accomplishments. With different careers and life experiences littering my past, I turned to the one thing I had always been good at...being creative.

I was good at thinking up exciting tales which was a result of always wanting to be more and live a bigger life. I was a dreamer with a large imagination. I decided that it is never too late, and life was too short to not leave something behind for others. For the first time, writing made me feel accomplished. All my scattered thoughts and meandering paths that I had traveled suddenly made sense. Though my experiences didn't lead to any great accomplishments in my younger years, they are now finding their place in the characters of my stories.

I am very excited to offer bits and pieces of my life experiences, fantasies, and observations to you in the form of words on a page. I am loosely woven through the pages of my books and I look forward to meeting you there.

She laughed and leaned against him. “This wasn’t quite what I had in mind for our first time.” Oh, God, did I just say that? I don’t want him to think…well, that I…shit. “I mean, not that there will be…or that you want—”

He slung his arm around her shoulder and kissed the top of her head. “Of course I want, Nina. But I know that’s not what you meant. If I have anything to say about it, there will definitely be a real first time. But we can talk about that later.” He stood and pulled her to her feet. “Why don’t you go get dressed and wake the girls? I’ll scramble some eggs and make some toast.”

CHAPTER REVEAL
PROLOGUE

“If it’s what you want to do, then go, son.” Mom dusts off the speckles of flour from the front of her apron. “If it’s what your heart wants, you have to follow it.”
I drop my head into the palms of my hands. My elbows grate against the worn grains of our dinner table. He’s going to hate me. This farm symbolizes everything he wants. I’m the one to take it over. My heart isn’t in it.
“Trenton.” Mom’s hand comes down on my shoulder. Her gentle, loving lips graze my cheek. “Follow your dreams. Your dad will be pissed. Shit, he’ll be livid, tearing the house apart once he finds out. He’s going to cuss, calling you every name in the book.”
Mom pauses, steadying her breathing. Her loving arms never leave my trembling shoulders. This shit is ridiculous. Fuck, I just graduated high school. I’m an adult by all means, yet a terrified child.
“Go, Trenton, leave this ranch and go explore the world. Your dad will come to grips with it. Just never forget your momma.”
“I…”
Mom cuts me off and ushers me to the door. She slings my duffle bag over my shoulder and places my truck keys in my hand. Mom gifts me with one loving kiss on my cheek before she pushes me out the door.
I left home forever that day and never looked back. The pain of disappointing Dad wasn’t lost on me.

EXCERPT REVEAL
LIZ

“There is a tall, handsome and might I add dreamy hunk of a man waiting just outside for you.”

I tried not to laugh at the wide-eyed expression of the teenage girl standing in my doorway. She was awestruck apparently, and the way she was smiling had to cramp her cheeks.

“Did you get his name?” I asked, already knowing who it was.

Her smile faltered as she looked over her shoulder, then back to me. “I forgot to ask,” she said in a high-pitched voice. “I guess I was distracted.”

It was my turn to smile, “Believe me when I say I know exactly how that can happen.” She looked a little relieved. “His name is Ben, and you can send him in.”

With a nod, she stepped out and within seconds he appeared in the open doorway.

“Good morning,” he said as he moved in and sat on the edge on my desk. His large frame practically swallowed up the surface beneath him. “You avoiding me again?”

“No.” I leaned back and crossed my arms over my chest. “I’ve actually been busy.”

He watched me closely, as if I would somehow show him I was lying. Arching my brow, I remained in place and his smile grew wider. “Have lunch with me.” It wasn’t a request.

“Busy,” I replied, holding up the stack of papers on my desk and giving them a little shake.

“Dinner then. I’ll even bring it to you if you can't get away.”

“What are we having?” I asked, still not yet agreeing.

“What do you want?” His eyes remained locked on mine as he gave me a mischievous grin. Ben and I had developed this little flirty game. In fact, we’d pretty much mastered it. I knew he wanted me, and I wanted him. That was never the issue. I just had to learn to get past my hesitance and fears of what could go wrong.

“Steak,” I finally said, ignoring the flutter in my stomach. “Seasoned vegetables and garlic roasted potatoes.”

“Can we forego the garlic? I kinda wanna kiss you later and I don’t want any excuses from you. If I add garlic into the mix, well, I’m setting myself up for disappointment.”

I couldn't help the laughter that bubbled up and spilled from me. “You’re insane.”

“For you, yes.”
