Check out this excerpt:

She turned and a frown pulled at the corners of her mouth. “Why are you staring at me?”

“I was just thinking.”

She inched closer; her fingers brushed against mine when she took the glass I offered. “About?”

“You.”

“Hm-hm, what about me?” She tipped the glass to her lips, and I zeroed in on them.

There was an attraction between us. A low buzz of arousal zinging under the surface, ready to be set free. Or at least I hoped that’s what was happening here.

“About what you’ve been through. I’m sorry someone set your place on fire.”

She sighed and turned away; the flirtatious energy evaporated when she started plating the food. “Shit happens, I guess.”

I stepped closer but didn’t crowd her space. “I realize I’m not from around here, but the chief sings your praises. And with the line of people I saw this morning, I have a hard time imagining anyone who’d want to hurt you in such a way.”

Regina picked up the two dishes and carried them over to the table. I grabbed the wineglasses and bottle to follow.

“That’s kind of you to say.”

I meant every word. It’d only been a handful of days, but the woman sitting across from me had a pull, like everyone wanted to be in her orbit. Maybe it was the pastries, but the few interactions I’d had with her from the butting of heads to the subtle flirting…it didn’t matter. I’d enjoyed each moment and had been sucked in from the first day.

However, there was something. The shift in her mood, the downplaying of what happened. There was more under the surface, and I found myself wanting to know what. But she didn’t know me like that, so I didn’t expect any sort of heart-to-heart soulful confessions.

“Are you planning to do another bake sale?”

“Are you going to chastise me if I do?”

She cut a piece of her steak and slowly closed her lips around it, keeping her gaze locked on me. My pants grew tighter in response. I picked up my wine and took a sip while shifting ever so slightly hoping to readjust and alleviate some of the discomfort.

“Would you want me to?”

Regina gave me an appraising glance while continuing to eat her food. “Not sure I know you well enough, yet, Mr. Special Investigator, to have that particular conversation.”

“Are there some sort of checkpoints I need to hit before we get to that level?”

“Maybe. Though I may have some concerns about you being up to the task.”

All I could do was laugh at her comment. There was something about Regina Parker, something that made conversation easy. Maybe it was her call-it-like-she-sees-it attitude or that there were no pretenses between us. Regardless, spending time with her was the highlight of my time in this little town. We ate, joked, and generally had a pleasant meal.

“Guess you didn’t like it,” she commented with a playful smile as she looked at my empty plate.

I shook my head and returned the grin. “Worst meal I’ve had in ages.”

She pushed back from the table and gathered our empty plates. I stood and took them from her hands. “Here, let me.”

“Just put them next to the sink. I’ll clean up later.”

“You sure you don’t want me to help you now?”

She leaned against the countertop and folded her arms across her chest. “Are you trying to stall so you can stay at my house longer?”

I moved toward her, leaving a little space, but close enough that if she gave the slightest indication, I could finally taste the lips I’ve been mesmerized with all night. “Well, I haven’t had dessert yet. I mean, I did come for a little bit of sugar.”

Regina closed the space between us, tilting her chin up while licking her lips. “And sugar you shall have.”
